I love using this stitch for some of my flower embroidery designs and it turns my flat work into a piece that literally has parts that can be moved and manipulated. You could say it gives things a little bit of life.

It’s not a stitch I would recommend as a beginner because it takes both hands, some extra coordination, and a bit of patience. There’s an element of awkwardness when first learning this stitch, and I think that’s probably true for most stitches, but with the popcorn lazy daisy stitch, it takes some getting used to.

How to Make the Popcorn Lazy Daisy Stitch

• Add a small single stitch going side to side, then come up near the beginning of the stitch.

• Create a row of loops using the small stitch as the anchor for the bottom.

  • Bring your thread over the wire from the front then go up the small stitch, making sure the needle goes over the working thread. (1)

  • Push the loop gently to the side of the little loop, and repeat to create more loops.

  • The wire is optional but does help keep the loops sizes consistent. You can leave the loops loose or use a safety pin too.

• Next, slide your needle halfway up through the small stitch to finish your last loop (3).

• Remove your copper wire, if you used one.

• Hold your needle in one hand, and with the other, slide the tail of your thread behind the needle (4).

• Bring the thread over your loops, then under and over the needle (5). You can wrap the needle once or twice, but once is plenty. A second wrap makes the tip of your petal slightly more pointy.

• Pinch your loops together (6), then carefully pull your needle through to form a small knot at the top of your loops,

• Push your needle to the back of your fabric if you want to hold the stitch in place.

If you want your stitch to be a bit fluffier, stitch it down so it’s a bit shorter, and if you want less fluff stitch the top down farther from where it’s attached.

If you’d like your popcorn lazy daisy stitch to stand up and be more 3-dimensional:

• Push needle through the top of your stitch from the front.

• Then push your needle through to the front from the side of your popcorn lazy daisy stitch, and push it through the fabric below.

  • Be sure to hold onto the top of your stitch and do this slowly so you don’t pull too much through. This will give you a cute stitch that can be manipulated to resemble a floating flower.

This is definitely not a beginner’s stitch and does take some tries to get it right. Have fun practicing this adorable 3d embroidery stitch and figure out whether using a tool or not works best for you. Once you get the hang of it you’ll probably want to use it in a lot of your flower embroidery!

What are Embroidery Stickers

Stick and stitch embroidery stickers are thin sheets of water-soluble stabilizer with a sticky back. You print or draw your design directly onto the surface, peel and stick it onto your fabric, stitch through it, and dissolve it away with water when you’re done. No tracing, no mess, no guesswork.

You might also hear them called sticky stabilizer or water-soluble stabilizer—they’re all the same thing.

There are two main types: tear-away and water-soluble. I personally only use the dissolvable kind. Tear-away versions work okay for simple patterns, but they often leave behind rough edges that are hard to remove. Water-soluble is cleaner, more polished, and far more satisfying to work with. Just make sure to keep the sheets away from moisture while you’re working!

The Supplies You’ll Need

Before you dive in, here’s what I use to make my stick and stitch embroidery stickers:

• Water-soluble stabilizer sheets — I use and love New Brothread’s Sticky Stabilizer. After trying several brands over the years, their precut sheets are my absolute favourite. They feed through the printer cleanly, stick beautifully, and dissolve without leaving any residue.

• A printer — I used to recommend only an inkjet printer because I believed it’s less likely to smudge. But guess what? I’ve learned that an inkjet printer works just as well with a few simple practices… I’ll share that down below.

• Sharp embroidery scissors

• Rubbing alcohol and cotton balls — for keeping your scissors and needle clean mid-project

• Your usual embroidery supplies — hoop, needle, floss, and fabric

4 Steps to Make Stick and Stitch Embroidery Stickers

Ready to get stitching? Here’s the full process from start to finish.

Step 1: Prepare your design 

Start with a digital design or sketch one out by hand. If you’re printing, set your design to the exact size you want it to appear on your fabric before you do anything else.

Step 2: Do a test run before touching your stabilizer sheet 

Whether you’re printing or drawing your design by hand, always test before committing to a sheet. If you’re printing, run your design on regular paper first to check the size and catch any mistakes — stick and stitch sheets can be pricey, so this one step can save you both money and frustration.

If you’re drawing by hand, test your pen or marker in the corner of the sheet or on a scrap piece to make sure the ink doesn’t bleed when it hits water. A small test now saves a ruined project later.

Step 3: Print or draw onto your stabilizer sheet 

Once you’re happy with your test, load your stick and stitch sheet into the printer and print your design. If you’re using an inkjet printer, allow the sheet to dry completely before handling—wet ink can smear and transfer onto your fabric.

Step 4: Cut out your designs 

Use sharp scissors to cut around each design, leaving a small border. The sticky backing builds up on scissor blades quickly, so keep your rubbing alcohol and cotton balls nearby and wipe the blades regularly.

You now have a set of stick and stitch transfer stickers! Now to use it, all you have to do is peel away the backing and press the sticker firmly onto your fabric. Smooth out any air bubbles as you go, working from the centre outward.

Then stitch directly through the stabilizer and fabric together—the design lines are right there, no slipping or guessing.

Once you’re done, soak your project in warm water. The stabilizer will dissolve away, leaving your embroidery clean and beautiful. Rinse gently until all traces are gone, then lay flat to dry.

Tips for Making Stick and Stitch Embroidery Stickers

Over the years I’ve picked up quite a few tricks that have made this process so much smoother — and I’ve put together a dedicated post with even more stick and stitch tips right here if you want to go deeper. But here are my essentials to get you started.

Separate the sheets before printing. 
They can stick together at the edges and jam your printer. A quick gentle peel before loading saves a lot of frustration.

Use small margins. 
I use 0.25-inch margins to fit more designs per page and get the most out of each sheet. But .5 inches is the standard that most people prefer.

Tips for an inkjet printer. 
The inkjet printer I use is the Epson Eco-tank. I used a Brothers laser printer for years but I switched about 2 years ago once I realized my inkjet printer did as beautiful a job as my Brothers. I also needed the extra space in my workspace. But, there are a couple of tips you’ll need to make sure your print comes out perfectly:

1. Print on the standard or draft setting to use less ink. If you use the best setting it will use extra ink that will bleed and smudge. Standard looks great and I have no issues with it.

2. Let your sheet dry for at least 5 minutes before you cut into it, and lay it flat.

By the way, the ink for my Epson Eco-tank keeps giving and giving! I’ve only had to refill the ink colors once in the past 2 years. I love and highly recomnend it!

Clean your scissors and needle regularly. 
The sticky backing builds up on both. Keep rubbing alcohol and cotton balls close, wipe them clean as you go, and let them dry before cutting again.

Avoid lotion on your fingers. 
It likely won’t dissolve the paper, but it can leave a residue that affects how well the sticker adheres to your fabric.

Store sheets carefully. 
Keep them in their original packaging and well away from drinks and spills. If I’m at a busy table, drinks go on a completely separate surface.

Manage humidity. 
If you live somewhere humid, a small fan or dehumidifier nearby can keep your sheets dry and crisp while you work — something worth knowing as you build out your embroidery transfer techniques toolkit.

Pros and Cons of Stick and Stitch

Not sure if this method is right for you? Here’s an honest breakdown.

Pros

Convenience. Just peel, stick, and stitch. No tracing, no complicated transfers — it’s one of the most beginner-friendly embroidery transfer techniques out there, and it makes embroidery for beginners so much less intimidating.

Precise transfer. You get crisp, clean lines and professional-looking results every time.

Fully customisable. Easily turn your own sketches or digital artwork into embroidery designs. It’s a brilliant tool if you want to embroider original patterns rather than working from a kit.

Saves your fabric. No permanent ink marks, no tracing errors, no ruined fabric.

Clean finish. Stick, stitch, dissolve in warm water — it rinses away completely. Perfect for delicate projects and anything that will be washed.

Cons

Can be pricey. Stick and stitch paper is a consumable, so costs add up if you use a lot. That said, if you’re working with multiple small designs per sheet, you can get excellent value from each one.

Update: Over the years, more brands have put out their version of sticky stabilizer. So, if you find one you like then stick with it (like the pun?). For me, I am really happy with Brothread brand.

Not reusable. Each sheet is single-use, so you’ll always need to restock. Worth factoring into your craft budget.

Sticky scissors and needle. You’ll need to clean your tools regularly throughout a session — rubbing alcohol makes this quick and easy.

Sensitive to moisture. Water-soluble stabilizer can dissolve or warp if it encounters humidity, spills, or damp hands. Handle with care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does stick and stitch work on clothing?

Yes — stick and stitch is one of the best methods for embroidering on clothing. Sticking the design directly onto fabric means no tracing through layers, and the stabilizer supports stretchy or thin fabrics like sweatshirts while you stitch. Dissolve it away with warm water when you’re done.

Will stick and stitch dissolve completely, or does it leave residue?

Stick and stitch dissolves fully in warm water, though you may notice slight stiffness or faint residue after the first soak — this is normal. Rinse again, gently rubbing any stubborn areas under running water. A 3-5 minute soak is usually enough. Lay flat to dry rather than wringing or tumble drying.

Can I use stick and stitch on dark fabric?

Pistil Stitch Tutorial

Here’s how to make the pistil stitch.

1. Come up to the top of your fabric and hold the needle in front of you.

2. Wrap your thread around the needle a couple of times about a centimeter away from the entry point (1). Obviously, the size of the bulb will vary depending on the number of wraps you use which is totally up to you.

3. Next, push the needle halfway into the fabric with one hand and gently pull the loose end of the thread with the other hand so the wraps gently hug the needle against the fabric (2).

4. Pull thread through to the back (3).

Taking your time is the key to getting a nice pistil stitch. This can take a little practice so don’t feel bad if your stitch looks a bit wonky.

TIP: If you are struggling to get the stitch to look straight try this… before pulling the thread to the back, take a look at your thread and see which side you started wrapping around the needle. If it starts wrapping from the left, like it is in the photo above, hold the loose end of the thread on the same side, and vice versa.

I found that this will help straighten out the bulb so it sits right on top of the straight section. If your thread is too loose though, it won’t help so be sure you’re giving it the right amount of tension as you finish the stitch.

Alternative Method

If you haven’t already noticed, the pistil stitch is really a combination of the straight stitch and french knot so you can also create it using those two stitches. The method above cuts out a step and is a bit faster.

Simply create a straight stitch. Start it where you’d like the bulb to end up. In my flower below, I want the bulb to be on the outside so I’ll begin the straight stitch from there and return to the back at the center (4).

Then come up where you’d like to place the bulbous part and add a french knot (5).

The result looks just like the pistil stitch. That is it!

Bullion Stitch Tutorial (Step-by-Step)

1. Form a loose base stitch (1):
   Come up through the fabric and insert your needle back down a stitch-length away but leave a very loose stitch sitting on the surface.

2. Bring your needle back up:
   Bring the needle halfway up ner the starting point. Do not pull the needle through. Instead, hold your needle from below the fabric with one hand so it stays firmly in place.

3. Begin wrapping the thread (2):
   With your free hand, pick up the working thread from the end that the needle is sitting next to, and wrap it several times around the needle shaft, gently and neatly.

4. Check the length of your wraps:
   Slide the wraps gently down the needle toward the fabric to see how long your stitch will be. Add more wraps if needed—more wraps create a longer or more curved bullion stitch.

5. Pull the needle through the wraps (3):
   Pinch the wraps firmly but gently between your fingers and slowly pull the needle through until the wrapped thread sits snugly against the fabric.

6. Settle the stitch (4):
   Push the wrap snugly and neatly down. Slow, steady movements help maintain the stitch’s shape and tension. If the needle feels stuck, gently twist the wrap—not too much—just enough to loosen it. If any wraps fall out of place, don’t panic. Use the tip of your needle to nudge them into a smooth, even coil.

7. To finish the stitch (5):
   Next, push the needle down to the back of the fabric to secure it in place.

The first few bullion stitches you make might look a little wild, so don’t feel discouraged. This is a technique that rewards patience. Once your hands learn the rhythm, the stitch becomes incredibly enjoyable—and very addictive.

For a beautiful floral effect, try making a cluster of french knots and then work bullion knots around them to form a soft, spiraled bullion stitch flower. This is one of my favorite ways to embroider roses. You can also experiment with wrap counts to create a mix of textures and curves.

Tips for a Smooth Stitch

• Use quality thread. High-quality embroidery threads like DMC have a smooth, firm texture that helps the thread glide through your wraps without snagging.

• Choose the right needle. Because you’ll be pulling the needle through your wraps, a slim needle eye is essential — a bulky eye makes that pull-through much harder. Standard DMC embroidery needles work well as long as you don’t wrap too tightly, but if you find yourself struggling, switch to a milliner’s (straw) needle. Its uniform width from tip to eye makes it ideal for bullion stitches and knots.

• Watch your tension. Wrapping too tightly makes the pull-through difficult; too loosely and the stitch looks uneven. Aim for snug but not stiff wraps, and adjust as you go.

• Mind your strand count. Fewer strands are generally easier to manage with bullion stitches. If you’re just learning the stitch, start with two strands before working up to more.

• Hold your wraps as you pull through. Use your thumb and index finger to gently hold the wraps against the needle as you pull it through. This keeps them from sliding around and gives you a neater, more even stitch.

• Keep your fabric taut. The pulling motion of this stitch can pucker loosely held fabric. Work with your fabric in a hoop or use a stabilizer to keep it firm and flat.

• Stitch in any direction. This stitch isn’t directional, so feel free to work at whatever angle suits your design. In this tutorial, we’ll stitch vertically so the technique is easy to follow.

• Extra wraps = natural curve. If you add more wraps than your stitch length calls for, the stitch will begin to curve on its own. Want a more dramatic arc? Just keep adding wraps.

Starting cross stitch is pretty simple once you get the basics down. You have your fabric, thread, needle, and a pattern to follow—and before long, you’re making little X’s across the fabric.

But there are a few things that aren’t always obvious when you’re first learning. Some are tiny details that make stitching easier, while others can save you a lot of frustration once you start working on your first few projects.

I’ve put together 13 cross stitch tips for beginners that I wish I had known when I first started. None of them are complicated, but they can make your first projects a little easier and a lot more enjoyable.

1. Start With a Small, Beginner-Friendly Pattern

One of the easiest ways to make cross stitch feel harder than it needs to be is to start with a project that’s too big or too complicated.

For your first project, look for a pattern that’s less than 40 × 40 stitches. That’s a manageable size for learning the basics without feeling like you’ve signed yourself up for a project that will take forever.

Size isn’t the only thing to consider, though. When choosing your first pattern, look for one that:

• Uses a manageable number of colors

• Has clear, easy-to-follow symbols

• Doesn’t have a lot of confetti stitching (individual stitches scattered throughout the design)

• Doesn’t rely heavily on fractional stitches or complicated details

• Looks like something you’ll actually enjoy stitching

A simple design that you’re excited about and can finish is a much better choice than a complicated pattern you picked because you thought it looked impressive.

2. Count Carefully Before You Stitch

One of the easiest ways to make a cross stitch project frustrating is to start stitching in the wrong place.

Before you make your first stitch, take a moment to check your starting point against your pattern. Count the spaces around it and make sure you’re following the correct symbols and colors.

When you’re starting a new section, count the spaces around your stitches before you begin. If you’re unsure, count again.

It might feel like you’re slowing yourself down, but a quick check now can save you from having to undo a whole section later.

3. Check Your Work as You Go

You don’t have to wait until you’ve finished a whole section—or an entire project—to compare your stitching with the pattern.

Every so often, pause and look at your work alongside the chart. Make sure the stitches are where they should be and that you’re still following the correct symbols and colors.

I actually use a timer for this. Every 15 minutes, I stop and check my work against the pattern. It only takes a moment, and it can save you from discovering a mistake after an entire evening of stitching.

This is especially helpful when you’re working on a pattern with lots of similar-looking areas.

If you’re using a paper pattern, marking off completed sections can also make it easier to see where you left off. One of my favorite apps for this is Pattern Keeper, which lets you keep track of your progress digitally as you work.

4. Keep Your Crosses Going the Same Direction

Your finished cross stitches will look much neater when all of the top stitches lie in the same direction.

For example, if the top half of your first cross goes from bottom-left to top-right, keep that same direction throughout the project.

This may seem like a small thing, but it makes a surprisingly big difference once you have a whole section stitched.

If your stitches aren’t perfectly identical at first, don’t worry. You’re learning! With a little practice, keeping your stitches consistent will become second nature.

5. Find the Right Thread Tension

Your thread should lie comfortably on top of the fabric without pulling or puckering it. Think snug, not tight.

It’s tempting to pull your thread firmly after every stitch, especially when you’re trying to make everything look neat. But cross stitch doesn’t need to be pulled tight.

If you pull too hard, you can distort the holes in the fabric and cause the fabric to bunch up. Your stitches may also look uneven.

This is one of those things that gets easier with practice. Eventually you’ll develop a feel for how much tension your thread needs.

6. Give Your Thread Some Room

It can be tempting to cut a really long piece so you don’t have to stop and start new thread as often, but longer thread has more opportunities to twist around itself.

A shorter length is much easier to manage, especially when you’re new to cross stitch.

And if your thread starts twisting while you’re stitching, let the needle hang for a moment and allow the thread to unwind. This simple trick can save you from a frustrating knot.

7. Keep the Back Tidy, Not Perfect

A tidy back is nice, but it doesn’t have to be perfect for your project to turn out beautifully. If you’re new to cross stitch, don’t get caught up in trying to make every thread on the back look perfectly organized.

The front is what you’ll see when your project is finished, so that’s where your attention should be. A few little tangles or imperfect threads on the back aren’t going to ruin your stitching.

That said, try to avoid large knots and unnecessarily long pieces of thread traveling across the back of your design. They can make the back bulky and, especially with darker colors, may show through to the front.

8. Start in the Center and Leave Enough Fabric

Starting near the center of your design makes it much easier to keep your finished piece properly positioned on the fabric. Once you’ve found the center of your pattern and fabric, you can work outward and know you’re not slowly drifting toward one edge.

Before you begin stitching, make sure you’ve also left enough fabric around your design.

How much extra fabric you’ll need depends on how you plan to finish your project, so it’s worth thinking about that before you make your first stitch.

And don’t forget to wash and dry your hands before you start, especially if you’re working with light-colored fabric. Oils and lotion from your hands can transfer to the fabric as you stitch.

9. Use the Right Number of Floss Strands

Embroidery floss is made up of six individual strands, but you will rarely stitch with all six.

Your pattern should tell you how many strands to use. For example, if it calls for two strands, separate two strands from the floss before stitching.

Using too many strands can get bulky and make it difficult to pull the thread smoothly through the holes in your fabric.

This is easy to overlook when you’re first starting out, especially if you’ve never worked with embroidery floss before. Using the correct number of strands helps give your finished stitches the look and coverage the designer intended.

10. Start and Secure Your Thread Without Knots

It might seem natural to tie a knot at the end of your thread to keep it from pulling through the fabric, but knots can create bumps on the back of your work and may even show through on the front.

There are several ways to start and secure your thread which I go over in my post:

11. Keep Your Thread and Pattern Organized

A little organization can make your stitching much easier to follow.

When you need to move the same color a short distance across the back, it’s fine to carry the thread. But for longer distances, it’s better to finish your thread and start a new one.

It also helps to work through your pattern in smaller sections rather than jumping around too much. This makes it easier to keep your place and avoid accidentally skipping stitches.

12. Take Breaks, Rest Your Eyes, and Check Your Lighting

Cross stitch requires a lot of close-up concentration, especially when you’re working on smaller designs. It’s easy to get caught up in a project and suddenly realize you’ve been stitching for hours.

Take regular breaks, stretch your hands, and look away from your work to give your eyes a rest. I also find good lighting makes a huge difference. I use a hands-free OttLite magnifier when I stitch, and it’s saved my eyes, especially when I’m working with smaller stitches.

If you’re squinting to see your fabric or distinguish between colors, try moving somewhere brighter or adding a good task light or magnifier. And if you’re feeling tired or frustrated, it’s perfectly fine to put your project down and come back to it later.

Cross stitch is supposed to be relaxing, so give yourself permission to take a break and enjoy the process.

13. What to Do When You Make a Mistake

You will make a wrong stitch eventually. Everyone does.

Maybe you counted incorrectly, used the wrong color, or suddenly realized you’re one square off.

Take a breath.

If you catch the mistake early, you can usually carefully undo the stitches and try again. Use your needle to loosen the stitches rather than cutting them with your scissors, since cutting too close to the fabric can accidentally damage it.

And sometimes a mistake is so small that you can simply leave it alone. Not every imperfect stitch needs to be fixed.

Give Yourself Permission to Learn

Your first cross stitch project isn’t supposed to look like it was made by someone who’s been stitching for twenty years.

You might miscount, have to undo a few stitches, or end up with stitches that aren’t quite perfect. That’s okay. You’re learning.

The more you stitch, the more comfortable you’ll become with your tension, counting, and thread. You’ll also discover the little techniques that work best for you—because there isn’t one “right” way to enjoy cross stitch.

There are so many fun embroidery stitches to choose from to create your work and the one I want to focus on right now is the petal stitch which is pretty easy to make, even for beginners. It’s not among the list of basic embroidery stitches for beginners but if you’re just starting out don’t worry. You’ll learn it in no time!

The petal stitch is commonly used for flowers like daisies and pairs perfectly with the french knot which can be used for the center.

The petal stitch in some ways resembles a lazy daisy stitch, but they’re not really the same thing. They both utilize loops to form their shape and are perfect for creating flower petals, but the petal stitch uses more loops and adds a bit more volume.

Vary the size, colors, and layout to create a variety of designs. And if you stack them you can create an effect that looks similar to hair braids!

Steps

1. To begin the petal stitch, create a small straight stitch, then come up next to it at the top (image 1). You’ll also see this being created with a loop, similar to the lazy daisy stitch. Both are equally fine.

2. For the next step, use a straight pin, preferably with a large head. Place it around 1/2” or so above the straight stitch (image 2).
   
   If you don’t have a straight pin you can also just add a small straight stitch where you want the top of your stitch to end. Make it loose enough so you can push your needle and thread through multiple times, but not too loose. The pin will make it easier so I recommend that route.

3. Next, wrap your thread around the back of the straight pin (or through the straight stitch) at the top, then push your needle and thread through the straight stitch you created in step 1. This will form your first loop.

4. Repeat step 3 until you’re happy with the volume.

5. As you go, adjust the loops so they sit nicely with each other. They should fatten up along the sides and once you like the thickness, tuck the end of the thread behind the top of the pin.

It’s time to secure the loops together at the top. If you used a small straight stitch, you can technically leave it that way and it would still look like a petal stitch. But the petal stitch involves a small knot at the top of the loops so here’s how to do that.

6. Slide your needle carefully through the loops, remove the pin, pinch the top with your fingers, and lift off the fabric carefully. Keep the needle through the loop.

7. Wrap the thread over and around the back of the needle then carefully pull it through to form a loose knot.

8. Before pulling the knot tight, take a look at the loops to make sure the knot will be centered and adjust if needed.

9. Set the loops against the fabric then push the needle through the fabric to secure the loops in place.

Tips

The petal stitch is a fairly easy stitch but it does take a bit of practice and here are some helpful tips to make it as perfect as possible.

• Take your time.

• Use at least 6 strands of thread to create the volume.

• Make the straight stitch that holds the loops in place large enough to accommodate all the loops but not too large… this will take a little trial & error, but not much.

• Be mindful of the tension you place on the loops. They shouldn’t be so tight that it pulls the fabric and it shouldn’t be so loose that the loops become sloppy.

• When you are creating the knot, adjust the placement so it’s in the center of the loops before you tighten it.

Honeycomb Stitch Steps

Ready to learn the honeycomb stitch? To make this embroidery stitch tutorial a bit easier to explain I’ve drawn guidelines and numbered the lines.

Start with the blanket stitch on line 1. Here’s a quick refresher if you need it (or head to my blanket stitch tutorial).

• Simply come up at A and return to the back at an angle, at B.

• Keep the stitch a little loose and come up at C, under the thread.

• Then pull it tight to form a right angle.

Repeat steps to create a row. If you prefer not to have a line across the top of your honeycomb stitch you can opt to create vertical straight stitches instead.

• Come up on line 3. This should start around halfway in from where the blanket stitch begins.

• Slide your needle under the first vertical stitch and pull through.

• Return to the back on line 4, about halfway in from the beginning of the 2nd blanket stitch.

• Keep the thread slightly loose and come back up directly above, on line 3 and pull through.

• Repeat these steps to finish another row.

• If you want to start your row with a vertical line, just add a straight stitch before adding the honeycomb stitch steps just covered.

• Repeat the steps.

Isn’t that lovely? While it’s definitely possible to create a similar pattern of cells using just straight stitches, it would take much longer, and you might lose some of the intricate details that make the honeycomb stitch so visually appealing.

I find that this method helps me keep the steps organized, eliminating the guesswork of where each corner should be, and ensuring the cells are consistent and neat.

The beauty of this technique lies in its simplicity and efficiency, allowing you to achieve a polished look without too much effort.

What Is Cross Stitch?

Cross stitch is a form of counted needlework where you create small X-shaped stitches on fabric to form a picture or design.

It’s usually worked on fabric with an even grid of holes, which gives you a natural guide for placing each stitch.

A cross stitch pattern acts as your roadmap, showing you where each stitch belongs and which color of thread to use. You don’t have to draw the finished picture yourself—you simply follow the pattern, one stitch at a time.

Cross Stitch Supplies

One of the best things about starting cross stitch is that you don’t need a room full of supplies.

For your first project, you’ll generally need:

• Cross stitch fabric — The surface you’ll stitch your design onto.

• Embroidery floss — The colorful thread used to create your stitches.

• A needle — A tapestry needle is commonly used for cross stitch.

• A pattern — Your guide for where each stitch belongs.

• An embroidery hoop — Helps hold the fabric while you stitch.

• Small scissors — For cutting your thread.

That’s really all you need to get started.

There are plenty of additional tools and accessories you can collect as you become more experienced, but you don’t need them to make your first project.

Choosing Cross Stitch Fabric

Choosing fabric can seem confusing at first because cross stitch fabric comes in different types and counts.

For many beginners, Aida fabric is an especially easy place to start. Its clearly defined grid makes it simple to see where your stitches belong.

You’ll also hear terms such as 14-count, 16-count, and 18-count Aida.

The number refers to how many fabric squares fit across one inch. For example, 14-count Aida has 14 squares per inch.

The important thing to remember for now is that a higher fabric count means smaller stitches, which also means a smaller finished design.

You don’t need to memorize all the different fabric counts before starting. Once you have a pattern in mind, you can choose a fabric count that gives you the finished size you want.

Understanding a Cross Stitch Pattern

A cross stitch pattern is essentially a map for your project.

Most patterns use a grid, with each square representing a stitch. Symbols, colors, or both tell you which thread color to use.

A pattern will usually include information such as:

• The design’s stitch count

• A chart

• A color key

• The thread colors needed

• Information about the recommended materials

You may also see a pattern described by its stitch count. For example, a pattern that’s 50 × 50 stitches is 50 stitches wide and 50 stitches tall.

The actual finished size depends on the fabric you’re using, so stitch count and finished dimensions aren’t the same thing.

For now, simply think of stitch count as the number of stitches that make up the width and height of your design.

How to Cross Stitch: The Basic Stitch

Now for the part you’ve probably been waiting for: how to make a cross stitch.

The basic cross stitch is simply two diagonal stitches that cross each other to form an X.

You’ll bring your needle up through the fabric, make one diagonal stitch, then make the opposite diagonal to complete the X.

As you continue stitching, you’ll repeat that same movement across the design.

One small detail makes a big difference: try to keep the top diagonal of each X going in the same direction. This gives your finished stitches a neat, consistent appearance.

Your pattern will usually tell you how many strands of embroidery floss to use, so you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

Once you’ve made a few stitches, the movement becomes much more natural.

How to Start Your First Cross Stitch Project

Once you have your basic supplies, it’s time for the fun part: choosing something to stitch.

Choose a Beginner-Friendly Pattern

For your first project, look for something relatively small and manageable.

A design with fewer colors, clear blocks of stitching, and an easy-to-follow chart can be more comfortable while you’re getting used to counting.

Most importantly, choose something you actually like. A simple flower, animal, seasonal design, or decorative motif can be much more motivating when you’re excited to see the finished piece.

Start Small

It can be tempting to choose a large, elaborate design when you’re first discovering cross stitch.

But there’s something special about finishing your first project. A smaller design lets you learn the basics, see your progress, and experience that wonderful moment when you make your final stitch.

Remember that small doesn’t necessarily mean quick. A design with lots of color changes or individual stitches can take longer than you might expect, even when the finished piece is only a few inches across.

Follow the Pattern One Stitch at a Time

You don’t need to understand the entire pattern before you begin.

Start with your chosen area, follow the symbols carefully, and work one stitch at a time. Before long, those individual X’s will start turning into something recognizable.

Don’t Assume a Small Pattern Will Be Quick

One thing that surprised me when I first started cross stitching was how long even a tiny design could take.

My first pattern was just over 1.5 × 1.5 inches. I thought it would be complete in an hour or two—it took me almost 6 hours!

That experience taught me that finished size isn’t the only thing that determines how long a project will take. Stitch count, the number of colors, color changes, and the complexity of the design can all affect your stitching time.

So when choosing your first project, give yourself permission to take your time. The goal isn’t to finish as quickly as possible. It’s to learn, enjoy the process, and eventually have something you’re proud to say you stitched yourself.

Step-by-Step French Knot Tutorial

For this basic embroidery tutorial I’m using 6 strands of thread in red.

1. Bring your thread through to the top of your fabric.

2. Next, hold your needle in front of you and wrap your thread over and around your needle twice.

3. Carefully push your needle halfway through the same hole you came up from (or as close as possible) and gently pull your thread until the wraps hug your needle.

4. Hold your thread down gently against your fabric and carefully pull your thread through to the back until if forms a knot. Practice varying up the number of threads and wraps to get a sense of how it will affect the size of your french knot.

That’s all there is to it.

Tips

Mastering the French knot takes a little patience, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a fun and meditative stitch to add to your embroidery projects.

Whether you’re using them for tiny floral buds, textured details, or decorative accents, getting the right look comes down to technique and practice. A few small adjustments—like how tightly you pull the thread or how many times you wrap it—can make a big difference.

Below are some helpful tips to ensure your French knots come out just the way you want them!

• The tighter you pull your thread through to make your knots, the smaller and more compact they will be compared to a knot pulled gently with the same number of wraps. A looser pull will create a slightly larger, softer-looking knot, so experiment with tension to get the effect you want.

• If you’re making a series of French knots spaced apart, be mindful that your thread can sometimes show through the front of your fabric, especially if you’re using a thinner material or lighter-colored fabric. To prevent this, consider weaving your thread under existing stitches on the back to keep it secure and hidden.

• One more thing—if you decide to stitch using metallic threads, be prepared for a tiny bit of a challenge. Metallic threads can be slippery and prone to fraying, making them trickier to control. Definitely practice using regular embroidery floss first to get comfortable with the motion. When you’re ready to try metallics, take it slow, and use shorter thread lengths.

Choose a Simple Cross Stitch Pattern

When it comes to cross stitch, size can be deceiving, and I learned that quickly!

If this is your first project, I highly recommend looking for a small, simple cross stitch pattern with a manageable stitch count and just a handful of colors. A size of 50x50 stitches is good but smaller is even better.

Why? Because, a smaller design is easier to keep track of and gives you a chance to get comfortable with the basics without feeling overwhelmed.

Once you’ve gained some experience, you can move on to larger and more detailed designs.

Prepare Your Cross Stitch Fabric

For a first project, 14-count Aida fabric is a great choice. The holes are large enough to see easily, making it a little easier to learn where your needle needs to go.

Cut your fabric a few inches larger than the finished design. This gives you enough room to hold the fabric in a hoop and leaves space around your finished stitching for framing or finishing.

If you’re using a hoop, you’ll want enough extra fabric around your design for the hoop to grip securely.

Find the Center of Your Fabric

Most cross stitch patterns are designed to be started from the center. Finding the center of your fabric helps you position your design correctly and gives you a good starting point for your first stitches.

I find that the easiest way to find the center is to fold your fabric in half from top to bottom, then fold it in half from side to side. The point where those folds meet is the center.

You can make a tiny mark at the center with a removable fabric marker, or simply use the crease as your guide.

Your cross stitch pattern will usually show you where its center is, too. Start by matching the center of the pattern with the center of your fabric.

Prepare Your Embroidery Floss

Embroidery floss is made up of several individual strands. For most cross stitch projects on Aida, you’ll use two strands of embroidery floss.

Cut a piece of floss about 18 inches long. Separate out the two strands you need, then thread them through your needle.

Try not to make your working length too long. Longer pieces tend to tangle and can wear out as you stitch.

If your particular pattern gives you different floss or strand instructions, always follow the pattern designer’s directions.

How to Start Cross Stitch Without a Knot

One of the nice things about cross stitch is that you generally don’t need to tie a knot to start stitching.

You can leave a short tail of floss on the back of your fabric and hold it in place while you make your first few stitches. Your stitches will secure the tail to the back of the fabric.

Once the thread is secure, trim away the excess. This keeps the back of your cross stitch project neater and avoids bulky knots. This is my go-to method.

How to Start Cross Stitch With the Loop Method

There’s also the loop method, which is another clean way to start a piece of embroidery floss—and it’s my personal favorite.

To use the loop method:

1. Begin with an extra-long strand of embroidery floss and fold it in half, creating a loop at one end.

2. Thread your needle with the two cut ends of the floss, leaving the looped end free.

3. Bring the needle down through the top of the fabric where you want your first stitch to begin and leave behind the loop, then bring your needle up where you want your half stitch to end and make sure to go through the loop (a).

4. Pull your needle through then return to the back where you came up, making sure you are not going back through the loop (b). In other words, just outside of the loop.

5. The result (c) is your first half stitch.

And that’s it! Your thread is anchored without a knot.

How to Make Your First Cross Stitch

Now for the fun part!

A basic cross stitch is made from two diagonal stitches that form an X. This is the most common stitch you’ll use, and many cross stitch patterns use little more than these simple X-shaped stitches.

Bring your needle up through one hole in the fabric and down through the opposite hole. Then bring it back up through the next hole and down through the remaining hole to complete the X.

Once you’ve made a few, the motion becomes second nature.

Which Direction Should Your Cross Stitches Go?

Try to make all of the bottom stitches in the same direction, and all of the top stitches in the opposite direction.

There’s no universal rule about which direction your stitches need to face. Consistency is what matters.

Aida is one of the most popular fabrics for cross stitch, especially for beginners.

It’s woven with a grid of small, clearly defined squares. Each square gives you a place to make one cross stitch, making it much easier to follow a counted pattern.

Aida is available in different counts and colors, but the count is the part that matters most when you’re deciding what fabric to use.

What Does “14-Count” or “18-Count” Mean?

The number tells you how many stitchable squares fit across one inch of fabric.

For example:

Calculate the width and height separately.

Remember: Stitched Size Isn’t Fabric Size

If your finished design will measure 3.6 × 3.6 inches, you don’t want to cut a 3.6 × 3.6-inch piece of Aida.

You’ll need extra fabric around the design so you have room to stitch comfortably and finish your project later.

How much extra you need depends on whether you’re framing the piece, putting it in a hoop, making an ornament, or using another finishing method.

When you’re unsure, it’s better to have a little too much fabric than not enough.

Which Aida Count Should You Choose?

For most beginners, 14-count Aida is a great place to start. The squares are relatively large and easy to see, and the finished design will be larger.

But there’s no rule saying you have to start with 14-count.

14-Count Aida

A good choice if you:

• Are completely new to cross stitch

16-Count Aida

18-Count Aida

You don’t have to be an expert to use 18-count. If you’re comfortable seeing and counting the squares, you can use it.

I personally love how designs come out with 18 count but it’s very hard on my eyes if I don’t use my magnifying glass.

The easiest way to choose

Think about the finished size you want. Want the design larger? Choose a lower count. Want the design smaller? Choose a higher count.

If you’re unsure, 14- or 16-count Aida is a simple place to begin, but I highly recommend trying the 14 count first.

What About Other Aida Counts?

14, 16, and 18 count are common choices, but you’ll also find Aida in other counts, such as 11-count and 20-count.

The same basic rule always applies: The lower the count, the larger the stitches. The higher the count, the smaller the stitches.

So you can use the count to adjust the overall size and appearance of your project.

What About Evenweave and Linen?

Once you start exploring cross stitch, you may come across evenweave and linen.

Unlike Aida, these fabrics don’t have the same obvious block-style grid. Cross stitch is often worked over two fabric threads instead of over one Aida square.

You may see something described as 28-count evenweave, over two.

For finished-size purposes, that is equivalent to 14-count Aida because you’re working over two threads.

Similarly:

• 28-count over two = 14-count equivalent

• 32-count over two = 16-count equivalent

• 36-count over two = 18-count equivalent

You don’t need to use evenweave or linen to get started with cross stitch. Aida is usually the simplest choice for beginners because its grid makes counting easier.

How Long Should You Cut Your Thread?

The golden rule: cut your floss to about 18 inches — roughly the distance from your hand to your elbow. This length is long enough for a good run of stitching but short enough that the thread won’t tangle or wear thin from being pulled through the fabric over and over.

It’s tempting to cut long pieces so you don’t have to re-thread as often, but just remember that it tangles more easily. I’m guilty of using longer pieces, but I’ve been doing this awhile. Start short and experiment with slightly longer pieces later to see what you’re most comfortable with.

By the way, if your embroidery pattern calls for a 6 strand stitch, it means 6 strands total. So if you don’t like leaving a loose end and prefer to fold your thread over and tie the ends together, you would need 3 strands. Folding it over will double the number of strands to 6.

How Many Strands Should You Use?

This is one of the first things beginners wonder about, and the answer is: it depends! Most hand embroidery patterns will tell you how many strands to use. But when in doubt, use this as a general rule: the finer the fabric, the fewer strands you’ll want. Don’t be afraid to experiment — you’ll quickly get a feel for what looks right.

Speaking of fabric — cotton and linen are the best choices when you’re learning how to embroider. They have a stable weave that won’t stretch or warp your stitches, and they’re just really lovely to work with.

As for needles, embroidery needles (also called crewel needles) have a sharp point and a long oval eye designed to accommodate multiple strands of floss. Pick one where your thread fits comfortably through the eye and passes through your fabric without forcing it — DMC needles are a reliable go-to.

Separating the Strands

This step is a little tricky at first, but once you find your rhythm you’ll enjoy this step. Do this with me.

1. Hold one end of your floss between your fingers. Let’s separate 2 strands from the rest.

2. Pull 2 strands about an inch or so away from the rest so your thread resembles the letter ‘Y’, then pinch the thread at the base where they are starting to separate with two fingers.

3. Use your other hand to gently and slowly pull the 2 strands out. Allow the thread to curl up below your fingers as you pull them out. They’ll uncurl once you’re done.

If you want to fold your floss in half and work with both ends on the needle, it’s easier to separate strands starting from the middle of your length, then return to the middle and work down the other side.

Take your time. If you go too quickly you can end up with a tangled mess instead.

Threading Your Needle

Once your strands are ready, pass them through the eye of the needle.

Take one end of your strands and fold it over your needle. Pinch it between your fingers so you just see the very top of the thread.

Slide the needle out, then wiggle the eye over the thread between your pinched fingers.

As long as the thread count isn’t too thick for the eye it will slide in nicely!

A Few Extra Tips Before You Start

A few good habits go a long way when you’re learning how to embroider. Here are some tips to keep in your back pocket:

Always trim the tail behind your knot short so it doesn’t get pulled through to the front when you stitch nearby.

1. Finishing your thread

There isn’t one right way to transfer embroidery patterns onto fabric. As with anything in embroidery basics, experimenting is the best way to find what works best for you. Once you discover your go-to method, you’ll likely stick with it—but it’s always helpful to know multiple techniques.

Sometimes, a different approach might be better depending on the fabric or design. I have two favorite methods that I rely on most of the time, but it’s great to have options, especially if you’re just getting started as an embroidery beginner.

5 Ways to Transfer Embroidery Patterns to Fabric

1. The Window Method

Using the window method is a lot like using a light box but you don’t need any special equipment and it won’t cost you anything. You just need your printed pattern, pen or pencil, tape, and a bright window.

Note: If you’re stitching to something like a t-shirt, make sure you’re tracing on the front of the fabric, not the inside of it.

1. Hoop your fabric. If you’re going to stitch your design on something like a t-shirt, set it on the hoop so the inside of the shirt is on the front of your hoop. I know it feels backwards, but this will set things up so you can trace your design against a hard surface.

2. Trim your pattern and tape it (with the design facing down) to the front of your fabric.

3. Place the front of the hooped fabric against a bright window and trace the pattern on the back with your pen or pencil.

4. Un-hoop the fabric when you’re done and re-hoop it so the tracing is on the front.

I typically use an HB pencil for this transfer technique. HB is about perfect — not too hard or too soft. If it’s too hard it can sometimes be difficult to trace, and if it’s too soft it can smudge. Make lines light but dark enough to see.

You can also transfer it without the hoop, but the advantage of using a hoop is that it will keep your fabric nice and tight. It will not only make tracing easier but it will make sure your transfer doesn’t end up looking warped.

3. Heat Erasable Fabric Pen

You don’t need a special pen to transfer embroidery patterns but if you want to try them there are heat erasable fabric pens. Just iron your finished embroidery and the heat will magically erase your pattern.

There are also washable fabric pens and some embroiderers love using them but I’m personally not a fan as I have better control with a simple pencil. With washable pens the ink disappears with water but I can sometimes still see a pale blue hue. A thin pen or pencil works just fine, and when all is said and done your stitches will cover the marks nicely.

Sticky Stabilizer

Another method that helps you transfer embroidery patterns is the use of a dissolvable stabilizer such as Brothread Sticky Water Soluble Stabilizer, which you can hand draw or print on.

This stabilizer comes in 8.5 x 11 inch sheets (as well as in a roll of 12″ x 6 yards) and is self adhesive. Just print your pattern, peel off the backing and stick it to your fabric. Stitch over it and soak in water to dissolve it away. It’s simple to use and it’s a great solution for transferring designs to thing like shoes which may not be as easy to transfer onto using other methods.

This method is a bit pricier compared to other methods, but the convenience can make it worthwhile. If you plan how to utilize the space carefully however, you’ll be able to get a ton of use out of it!

Transfer Paper

To use transfer paper (or wax free carbon paper) you’ll need a stylus or ball point pen.

Lay your fabric on a hard surface & tape down. Tape your transfer paper over it. Then tape your pattern over the transfer paper and trace with your stylus, or embossing pen.

Be sure to get the correct type of transfer paper. Some are waxy and can be difficult to transfer and the lines will be hard to remove so any random marks may not disappear. You’ll also want to use a hard surface as you trace so you can get as sharp a tracing as possible.

This method is great when your fabric is dark.

You can also hoop it to keep the fabric tight. Simply hoop your fabric, set trimmed carbon paper (chalk side facing the fabric) to the inside of your hoop. Then set your template on top of it. Tape the edges, and trace.

Before you remove your template and carbon paper, lift a corner to make sure you didn’t miss anything. It will save you a lot of headache.

Transfer Embroidery Patterns Using Spoonflower

I have a Spoonflower shop and I absolutely love, love, love using them for both my fabric designs and embroidery patterns! Not only is it easy to upload my patterns but I also get to choose my fabric. I love their signature cotton fabric which is perfect for embroidery!

Keep in mind that in order to use this method the design you upload has to be your own and they will ask you this before you’re allowed to use their service. It’s a good thing because it protects you and other creators… another reason to love Spoonflower!

While you can order an 8 x 8 inch swatch which is the perfect size for small designs I often order a yard of fabric so I can have multiple patterns printed at once which is more cost effective.

To transfer embroidery patterns onto fabric using Spoonflower your file needs to be a jpg, png, gif, and tif files, and upload is easy! You’ll be able to see how your fabric will lay on your swatch, fat quarter, or yard before you purchase it. It does take a week or so to get your order but I think it’s worth the wait. This option also allows you to add color to your patterns which adds a little extra magic!

This is a great option if you create your own designs.

My Favorite Method

Of the five transfer methods, I recommend the old-fashioned window method—it’s simple, inexpensive, and doesn’t require any special materials.

The stick & stitch stabilizer is another favorite because it lets me start my embroidery project quickly without much prep, but the stabilizer is a bit pricey, in my opinion. However, my absolute favorite method involves using a home printer. It’s fast, easy, and creates a precise transfer. That said, not everyone has a printer, so I’ve made a separate tutorial for this technique.

With the printer method, there are some size limitations since you’re restricted by the maximum print size your printer allows.

To use this method, you’ll need a standard home printer, 8.5 x 11-inch sticker paper, and a pair of scissors. Simply adhere your fabric to the sticker paper, trim as needed, and print your design directly onto it. There are a few extra details to keep in mind, so I put together a full guide on how to transfer your pattern using a home printer—including a quick video tutorial. Take a peek!

5 Easy Feather Stitch Variations

1. Basic Feather Stitch

It starts off like the fly stitch which uses the basic ‘V’ shape and ends up looking like a bunch of ‘V’s that stagger from side to side.

• Create 4 parallel guide lines.

• Make a loose stitch from the top of line 2 and 4 (A to B).

• Come up at C, over the loop. Pull to form a ‘V’.

• Next, add another fly stitch which will sit slightly to the left: Return to the back directly left of C, on line 1 (D) to form a loose loop.

• Come up at E, over the loop and pull through to form another ‘V’.

• Repeat your steps on the right, then left, and continue until you’re happy with the length. When you’ve reached the end, tie down by creating a tiny stitch directly below your last ‘V’.

2. Closed Feather Stitch

With the closed feather stitch variation, the ‘V’ shapes still go from side to side, just like in the basic variation, only this time it’s at an angle.

Draw 2 parallel lines and create your first ‘V’:

• Create a loose loop at the top of lines 1 and 2 (A to B).

• Come up at C, over the loop and pull through to form the first ‘V’ which will look angled.

• To repeat on the other side, make a loose loop from C to B.

• Come up over your loop on line 2 at D. Then pull your thread through. Repeat steps.

3. Straight Feather Stitch

In this feather stitch variation, the ‘V’ shapes are stacked on top of each other with one side of the ‘V’ being straight and the other angled.

• Draw 2 parallel guidelines

• Then come up at A, then down at B to form a loose loop.

• Come up at C, over the loop and pull through to form angled ‘V’.

• Return to the back at line 1, next to C (at D) and form a loose loop.

• Come up over the loop at E and pull through.

• Repeat these steps until you’re happy with the length then add a small tie stitch at the very bottom to hold that last ‘V’ in place.

You can also create this variation going in the other direction using the same steps. You can also combine them by placing them directly next to each other which gives it the illusion the the center is braided.

4. Maidenhair

• Draw 7 parallel lines. Line 4 will be the center line that each ‘V’ extends from.

• Come up at the top of line 3 (at A) and return to the back at B to form a loose loop.

• Come up over the loop at C and pull through.

• Return to the back at line 2 (D) and form a loose loop.

• Come up at E, over the loop and pull through.

• Return to the back at F on line 1 to form a loose loop.

• Come up at G, over the loop and pull through.

• Now repeat these steps on the other side and repeat until you’re happy.

5. Double Feather Stitch

The double feather stitch is created just like the basic feather stitch except you’ll create three ‘V’ shapes for each direction.

• Make 6 parallel guide lines.

• Come up at line 2 (A) then return to the back at line 4 (at B) to form a loose loop.

• Come up at C, above your loose thread & pull through to form the first ‘V’.

• Return to the back at D (on line 5) to form a loose loop.

• Then come up at E, above your loose thread, and pull your thread through.

• And do this one more time to the right. Return to the back at F to form a loose loop, then pull your thread through at G.

• Now repeat these steps to create 3 more V’s, only this time towards the left.

• Continue in this manner until you’re happy, then tie down your last ‘V’ with a small stitch at the bottom.

If you’re like me, then you’re not a fan of tracing embroidery patterns onto fabric. It’s my least favorite part of the entire process and something I used to really dread — I just wanted to jump into stitching — that is until I did a little experiment and found a quick solution.

I’m going to show you how to transfer patterns with a home printer and sticker paper that you just might fall in love with!

This method is not only precise, it completely simplifies the whole process. No smudging, no fading, and no extra steps to remove markings when you’re done — just clean lines, ready to stitch.

I’ve transferred embroidery patterns hundreds of times this way and it’s become my go-to embroidery transfer technique without question. And it won’t cost you much to get started. If you already own a printer, a pack of sticker paper is really all you need.

I also love using stick and stitch paper — it also uses the printer and is even easier to set up — but there’s a trade-off. Once your stitching is done, you have to dissolve the stabilizer in water, let it dry, then rehoop before you’re truly finished.

But for a method that requires zero cleanup once the stitching is done, the sticker paper approach wins. You do a little more work upfront, and nothing afterward. Plus, the sticky stabilizer can get pricey — this method gives you the same great results for a fraction of the cost.

If you don’t have a printer yet, a decent one runs around $100 -$200 (at the time of this post writing) — an affordable option, and you’ll get plenty of use out of it beyond embroidery. So many of you have asked me how I do this, so today I’m breaking down the whole process from start to finish.

What You’ll Need to Transfer patterns

These are the only supplies you need to print on fabric with a home printer:

• Printer — Both inkjet and laser printers work well. I use a Brother laser printer and an Epson Ecotank inkjet and both work great, but I almost always prefer my Epson printer. It prints beautifully and I use it every single day. I have yet to refill the ink tanks after a full year!

• Sticker paper — I use Online Labels 8.5 x 11 inch sticker paper, but any full-sheet sticker paper in that size works just fine.

• Fabric — Your fabric needs to be slightly larger than your sticker paper with at least half an inch on all sides. Keep in mind that with a standard home printer, you’re generally working within the size of an 8-inch hoop. If you need to transfer patterns for a larger hoop, there’s a simple workaround I’ll walk you through in step four.

• Fabric scissors — Use fabric scissors rather than embroidery scissors for trimming. Your hand will thank you.

• Your pattern — Print your pattern onto paper and make sure it’s centered and the size you want.

How to Transfer Embroidery Patterns onto Fabric: Step-by-Step

1. Step One — Attach the sticker paper to your fabric

• Start with your ironed fabric laid flat on a clean surface.

• Take your sheet of sticker paper and fold back about 2 inches of the backing to expose the sticky side.

• Press that exposed section firmly onto one end of your fabric to anchor it in place.

• From there, slowly peel the rest of the backing away inch by inch, smoothing the sticker paper down onto the fabric as you go. Take your time here — working slowly helps prevent bubbles and wrinkles from forming.

• Once the backing is fully removed, rub firmly over the entire surface to make sure everything is securely bonded.

• Flip the fabric over and smooth out any wrinkles on the front side. Be sure your hands are clean to avoid transferring any dir or oil onto the fabric.

2. Step Two — Trim and secure the edges

Trimming the fabric with the sticker paper attached is important so it feeds cleanly through your printer.

• Place it back down on a hard surface. If the fabric side is facing up, lay a clean sheet of paper on top before rubbing it down — this keeps oil and dirt from your hands off the fabric.

• Press firmly all over, giving the edges extra attention.

• Next, gently pinch along each edge and pull outward to check for loose threads. Remove any that come away easily and trim stubborn ones with scissors.

• Then go over the edges one more time with firm pressure. It might feel like a lot of attention for such a small detail, but loose edges are the most common cause of printer jams — a few extra seconds here saves a lot of trouble later.

3. Step Three — Print your pattern

• Before you transfer embroidery patterns onto fabric, do a test print on paper at around 40% opacity. Lighter lines are easier to hide behind stitches and less likely to be a distraction. It’s one of those small beginner embroidery tips that makes a big difference in the final result.

• If your test print looks centered and clean, load your fabric into the printer tray — fabric side up, not sticker side — and print using plain paper settings at normal quality.

One note on dark fabric: this method won’t show up on darker materials since the ink isn’t opaque enough to be visible. For dark fabric, you’ll need a different embroidery transfer technique, like white carbon paper or a transfer pen designed for dark backgrounds. 4. Step Four — Peel and hoop

• Carefully peel the sticker paper away from the fabric and you’ll be left with your pattern printed clean and crisp, right where you want it.

• Hoop it up and start stitching — no soaking, no heat removal, nothing else to do.

By the way, you can reuse your sticker paper two or three times before it’s time to retire it. As the stickiness wears off, the risk of a printer jam goes up — so it’s not worth pushing it past that.

If you’re working with a pattern sized for an 8-inch hoop and your fabric is coming up short on the narrow side, here’s a quick fix: sew an additional 1.5-inch wide strip of fabric along each narrow edge. The added pieces won’t be visible from the front, and you’ll have plenty of fabric to grip in the hoop without distorting your design.

A quick note on fabric: stick to non-stretchy, medium-weight wovens while you’re learning. Quilting cotton, linen, and muslin all hoop beautifully and are very forgiving for beginners. Avoid knits and stretchy fabrics for now — those require extra techniques to hoop without distorting.

Choosing the Right Embroidery Hoop

There are several types of embroidery hoops to choose from, and the material makes a real difference in how well your fabric stays in place.

Bamboo hoops are the most affordable and the most common starting point for beginners. They work well, but the tension between the inner and outer ring can be a bit loose, which sometimes lets fabric slip.

Beechwood hoops are pricier, but they’re my personal favorite. The quality is noticeably better — the fit between the two rings is tighter, which means your fabric stays put much more effectively. They also look beautiful if you’re finishing your embroidery as a display piece.

Plastic hoops can offer a firm grip and are often lighter than wood. Some have a lip on the inner ring that helps lock fabric in place. These are not as pretty but will still do the job.

Hoop size matters too. As a general rule, choose the smallest hoop that fits your design comfortably. A smaller hoop gives your fabric more support while you’re stitching and is easier to maneuver.

How to Hoop Fabric: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Loosen the screw

Turn the screw on the outer hoop counterclockwise to loosen it. You want the outer ring to be relaxed enough to separate from the inner ring easily.

Step 2: Separate the two rings

Lift the outer hoop away from the inner hoop and set it aside. Place the inner hoop flat on your work surface.

Step 3: Position your fabric

Lay your fabric right-side up over the inner hoop. Make sure your design or transfer is centered, with even fabric extending past the hoop on all sides. You want at least 1.5–2 inches of overhang all the way around.

Tip: If you’re right-handed, position the screw to your right before you start. If you’re left-handed, keep it to your left. This makes it much easier to tighten the screw once your fabric is in place.

Step 4: Press the outer hoop down

Place the outer ring over your fabric and inner hoop, lining everything up. Press down firmly to seat the outer ring back over the inner one. The fabric will be sandwiched between the two rings.

Step 5: Tighten the screw

Tighten the screw enough to hold the fabric in place — but don’t crank it all the way down just yet. You want some room to make adjustments.

Step 6: Pull the fabric edges taut

Holding the hoop in one hand, use your other hand to gently tug the fabric edges outward, working your way around the hoop. The goal is an even, drum-tight surface — when you tap the center of the fabric lightly, it should feel firm, like the head of a drum.

Pull gently and evenly. Don’t yank hard in one direction, as this can distort the weave of your fabric.

Step 7: Re-tighten the screw

Once your fabric is nice and taut, tighten the screw firmly. If you have a screwdriver, this is a great time to use it for a little extra security. Give the fabric one final check — if it’s loosened at all, pull and re-tighten again.

Tips for Different Fabric Types

Not all fabrics hoop the same way. Here’s what to keep in mind as you work with different materials:

Quilting cotton — the easiest fabric to hoop. Crisp, stable, and holds tension well.

Linen — also excellent for hooping. Has a natural texture that grips the hoop well.

Muslin — great for practice. Very forgiving and easy to work with.

Loose weaves / gauze — trickier to hoop tightly. Try backing it with a layer of stabilizer (see below).

Stretchy fabrics and knits — these require special care. Hooping a knit without stabilizer can stretch and distort the fabric, resulting in puckered stitches once it’s released. If you’re working with a knit, use a cut-away stabilizer beneath your fabric to support it.

Thick or layered fabrics — loosen your hoop screw more than usual before hooping so the rings can accommodate the extra bulk.

What Is Stabilizer and Do You Need It?

If you’ve seen embroiderers talk about stabilizer, it’s simply a backing material that adds structure and support to your fabric while you stitch. For hand embroidery on a stable woven fabric, you often don’t need it. But it becomes very helpful when:

• Your fabric is thin or loosely woven

• You’re working on stretchy fabric

• You want extra crispness in your finished stitches

Two common types for beginners:

• Tear-away stabilizer — placed beneath your fabric in the hoop, then torn away after stitching. Good for woven fabrics.

• Cut-away stabilizer — remains permanently behind the stitching after you trim the excess. Better for stretchy or knit fabrics, since tear-away can distort the stitches when removed.

How to Get More Grip from Your Hoop

If your fabric keeps slipping — especially in a bamboo hoop — there are a few easy fixes:

Wrap the inner hoop with twill tape or fabric strips. Cut a long, thin strip of cotton fabric and wrap it tightly around the inner hoop, overlapping as you go. Secure the end with a few stitches or a knot. This adds friction and helps grip your fabric much more securely.

Apply hoop tape. Edmunds EHT-1 Stitchers No-Slip Hoop Tape is a product made specifically for this. Apply it to the inner hoop (and optionally the outer) for an instant grip boost.

Use medical micropore tape in a pinch. I’ve done this myself in an emergency! Apply it to both hoops, and since it’s slightly wider than most hoops, you can easily tear off the excess along the perforated edge. It works surprisingly well.

Common Hooping Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced embroiderers make these mistakes from time to time. Knowing about them in advance will save you a lot of trouble:

1. Fabric too small for the hoop: If your fabric doesn’t extend at least 1.5 inches past the hoop on all sides, it’ll be nearly impossible to pull taut — and it may slip right out. Always cut your fabric generously.

2. Over-tightening after hooping: Once your fabric is in the hoop, aggressively cranking the screw can create uneven tension across the surface. Instead, loosen, re-center your fabric, and re-hoop rather than just torquing the screw tighter.

3. Hooping on a slippery surface: If your hoop slides around while you’re trying to press the rings together, it makes the whole process frustrating. Try hooping on a non-slip mat or a rubber shelf liner — the grip makes a huge difference.

4. Not re-checking tension: After you finish tightening, always do a final check. Press lightly on the fabric center — if it gives or feels loose, pull and re-tighten.

5. Forgetting to center your design: It’s easy to lay fabric over the hoop without thinking about whether your design is centered. Before you press the outer ring down, double-check that your pattern is right where you want it.

The Cross Stitch

Let’s start with the cross stitch. As the name suggests, this stitch looks just like the ones used in traditional cross stitch patterns, forming a simple ‘X’ shape.

It’s one of the easiest stitches to make, and while it doesn’t require much instruction, I still like to provide guidance to ensure your stitches look polished and consistent. So, here we go!

1. Begin with a diagonal stitch.

It can go from left to right or right to left—it’s completely up to you. While the direction doesn’t matter, it’s a good habit to stay consistent, especially if you plan to add multiple cross stitches in your design.

Keeping the same direction for each base stitch creates a uniform look, making your embroidery appear neater and more intentional. Whether you’re filling in a shape or creating a decorative border, this simple adjustment can make a big difference in the final result.

2. Then add a diagonal stitch over it to create the ‘X’ shape.

Use it as a simple stand alone accent stitch or group them to create cute design elements or even as an open fill stitch.

The Loop Stitch

The look and texture of the loop stitch is very similar to what you’d see with punch embroidery. It’s fun and loopy!

1. Start by coming up to the top of your fabric, then push your needle through right next to it.

2. Pull your thread through slowly and leave a little loop behind.

3. Continue adding loops close together until you achieve the fullness or texture you’re looking for.

As you pull your needle through, keep an eye on your thread to prevent any loops from slipping to the back. This can happen if the loops shift or get caught in the working thread, so a little attention to detail will help keep everything in place.

Take your time and be mindful of your tension so you don’t pull your thread too tightly. If your loop accidentally slips to the back, you can use your needle to gently pull it forward again—but let’s be honest, that can be a real pain.

It’s much easier to work carefully from the start than to spend extra time fixing a rushed stitch.

A gentle touch and steady pace will ensure your loops stay fluffy, secure, and exactly where you want them.

Mastering the cross stitch and loop stitch opens up so many possibilities for adding charm and texture to your embroidery projects. Although this stitch might take a few tries to perfect, don’t get discouraged! I’d consider it an intermediate-level stitch, but with steady hands and a little patience, you’ll have it looking polished in no time. My first few attempts were far from perfect, so if yours look a bit off at first, that’s completely normal. The key is to keep your tension even and adjust your loops as needed.

What To Do With the Oyster Stitch?

The oyster stitch has a little twist inside of a loop and my favorite use for it is making flower buds. It gives them texture and feels a bit as if there are petals all bundled together. Group them together to create a flower or space them out to create an open fill shape.

I’ve also used them to create fun little leaves and open-fills. The texture is what makes this stitch so cute. Try adding it as a unique design element for borders on sewing projects.

Step One

I’m going to draw a small vertical guide with points A, B, & C to make this tutorial a bit easier.

Come up all the way through your fabric at A.

Then push your needle through B, and come up at C. Don’t pull the needle all the way through. It should sit like the image on the left.

Step Two

Pick up your thread and wrap it under the needle from left to right.

Then pull your needle through.

Tip: I like to use my other hand to control my thread so I don’t accidentally pull too hard which would result in a wonky looking stitch. If you find that your stitches aren’t as pretty as you’d like, try this:

Gently hold your thread against the fabric with your finger (at the arrow), then pull your needle all the way through to create a lovely little twist.

You don’t necessarily need to hold the thread down at the arrow, but I found that this keeps the shape much better.

Step Three

Push your needle under the top right leg of your loop (3).

This is where it can get a little tricky. To keep your twist from unravelling, gently hold it down at the arrow as you pull your thread and needle through at the top. Be careful not to pull too hard. The loop should be nice and snug, but not too tight.

Once your thread is pulled through it will look like image 4.

Step Four

Next, let’s wrap the thread around your twist on the left side of the knot. To do that, push your needle next to the top of your stitch (A) and back up at the bottom of your stitch so it looks like image 5.

Wrap your thread under the needle from left to right (6).

Hold the thread down at the arrow and carefully pull your needle and thread through. Adding a little pressure to the thread as you pull is a good way to control how hard you pull and ensures you don’t overdo it.

Your oyster stitch will look like image 7 once the thread is pulled through. To tie the stitch down, return to the back at the very bottom of your stitch.

About This Embroidery Pattern

This cute heart-shaped flower embroidery pattern is inspired by Scandinavian motifs and features four heart shapes adorned with delicate yellow flowers and soft leaves. It fits beautifully in a 4-inch hoop, though I used a larger hoop in the video for a clearer view.
