Self Care Offers Amazing Benefits that Come Out of Practicing it on a Regular Basis

I think it’s really important because we sometimes need a little nudge to remember to love ourselves.

Even when our lives are chill and we’re in a good place, it’s still important to do things that nurture our well being so we can maintain our happy place.

Think of yourself as a happy flower. The bees, water, and sun represent self care. With water, sun and the bees you’ll thrive! But when they’re gone, you’ll wilt sooner than later.

All living things like flowers, you, and me, need some love and maintenance, even during the best of times.

Now what about when things aren’t going so great?

When we have so much going on in life, whether it has to do with work, family, friends, finances, whatever it might be, it’s easy to fall into a hectic lifestyle that it can leave us feeling exhausted, depressed, or unfulfilled.

Our personal growth can become stunted and our frustrations can affect everything and everyone around us.

I know what that’s like and omg, it’s so not fun! But thankfully I took the right steps to make things better.

I began practicing self care by setting goals, creating morning and evening routines, and distancing myself from negative people, and it was one of the best things I could have done for myself!

I was eating and sleeping better, my energy level jumped up, my creative block disappeared, and I was accomplishing things on my bucket list! Most importantly, my stress level was down and I was feeling happy again!

Because it made such a wonderful impact on my life I am a huge believer in taking care of yourself first because if you don’t nurture your well being you could very well wither away.

So if you haven’t been practicing self care, it will take a little getting used to doing things for yourself… for YOU…

But the good news is it’s actually not as difficult as it might seem, and it can be fun if you can focus on the benefits and be present in the moment as you work on you.

You just might discover some amazing things about yourself.

If you’re thinking that you just don’t have the time to add anything else to your busy schedule (which is what I first thought when I began implementing self care into my life), I have news for you…

Self care will actually help you find time you didn’t know you had.

So what is self care, how does it benefit you, and why should it be a priority?

Before you implement self care as part of your daily routine, I think it’s important to understand just what it is and why you should care about it so you have a really good reason to embrace it.

What is it?

I think most of us have heard the words, ‘self care’ at some point in our lives, and it’s kind of exactly what it sounds like. In a nutshell, it simply means that you are purposefully working on your happiness and well-being.

We all practice it to a degree. We do things like brush our teeth, shower, eat, and sleep.

But it’s actually more than that. The key word here is ‘purposefully’.

Self care is about being deliberate in our actions to better ourselves and situation.

It helps us to be the best we can be mentally, physically, and spiritually.

It means being mindful and thoughtful about the what we are doing to create positive changes in our lives and peeling away the things which might be holding us back from living up to our full potential.

It means being present for ourselves when we implement those routines.

When Should We Practice Self Care?

I believe we should practice self care regularly, not just when we are feeling stressed out. When you see how it will benefit you you’ll understand why it makes sense.

So let me get my nerd on for a moment here…

Remember when I said you might find this fun? Here’s why I say it…

When you practice self care on a regular basis your brain will form wires and strengthen your neural pathways for the actions you repeat. As you start to see the benefits, your cortisol level will go down while your dopamine levels will go up!

You’ll start to associate your actions with feelings of reward and you’re going to be excited about the changes that taking shape in your life! Those actions will become things you want to do because you’re getting positive benefits from them which means practicing self care will only get easier.

To me, that is fun and exciting!

Why Should Self Care Be a Priority?

Well, we’re about to get into the benefits so you can see why caring for yourself should be number one! Then I’ll offer up some easy self care ideas you can implement today to get you started!

Of the many reasons you should make self care a priority in your life, here are 13 of my favorite:

  • You’re going to reduce your stress level because you’re going to take some ‘me time’ to love yourself and take your mind off of everything else. Try things like stretching, meditation, or taking a nice relaxing bubble bath.
  • When you’re less stressed it means you’re able to dump unwanted thoughts from your head which leads to a calmer mind & mental clarity. With less things floating around in our noggins we’re able to process thoughts much better.
  • With a calmer mind and mental clarity come better problem solving & decision making. And better decision making can lead to so many positive outcomes such as life goals coming true, creating a circle of great friends, and improving your health.
  • Your environment can affect how you work, how you feel, and how you think. As you implement your self care routines chances are you’re not only going to dump your mind of clutter but your environment as well. Wanting to declutter your environment will just come naturally.
  • It probably goes without saying after reading the first 4 amazing benefits of self care that you’ll find that you’re going to be more productive and efficient! Love this!
  • You’re also going to feel more creative and I’m not just talking about artsy creative. You’re going to be more creative in a well rounded way.
    • What I mean is, you’ll be more willing to try new things and that could mean taking a scenic route to the park just so you can take in the colors of the trees or coming up with a solution to a problem in a way that perhaps is unusual but works!
    • You just might change up your wardrobe or hair for fun!
  • You’ll start to remember what it means to have fun!
  • How about boost your confidence and self love?
  • It can also improve your relationships because who doesn’t want to be around people who make them feel happy and loved?
    • Your relationships will improve also because you’re mind is much clearer and you’ll be able to see who affects you in positive or negative ways…
    • and while we all hate to say goodbye, sometimes it’s necessary if someone impacting you in a way that stunts your happiness.
  • You’re also going to find increased energy levels when you start self help steps to improve your health and mindset.
  • You’ll also sleep better! For so many of us who have trouble with this one, this is huge!
  • Because self care is all about improving yourself overall it’s going to also improve your longevityLess stress, better sleep, and better care for our well being is good for our hearts, blood sugar level, mental state, and more!
  • Your organization skills will improve greatly so you won’t be wasting time looking for things or trying to figure out when or where you’re supposed to be. That means…
  • You’re going to discover time you didn’t know you had.
    • Let’s say you’re always looking for something because you’re disorganized. Even if it takes away 10 minutes of your day it adds up! If it happens only twice a week, that still equates to 20 minutes a week. It might seem small but…
    • Guess what? That adds up to over 17 hours in a year! I can think of so much I could do with those 17 hours! Kind of puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?
  • When you have more time it means you can do more such as be present for your family and friends, take vacations, help others, and make more money.
  • You’ll smile more and so will your heart and the people around you … doesn’t that sound amazing?!
